The photo shows a picturesque tropical beach with white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water. Traditional wooden boats with white sails are resting near the shore, while the branches of an exotic tree stretch above the beach.

Zanzibar is a unique destination where you can take a great photo without having to search for a specific viewpoint. Turquoise water, bright beaches, dhow boats, palm trees, the old doors of Stone Town and everyday life create a remarkable variety of scenes. Light also plays an important role – sunrise and sunset can completely transform the appearance of the same location. The tides have an impact too, particularly along the east and southeast coasts, where the landscape can change significantly throughout the day. If you are planning to photograph Zanzibar, it is therefore worth exploring more than one location. At World Travelling Company, we offer three different places to stay – Kaskazi Hotel Zanzibar, Tamu Tamu Zanzibar Boutique Hotel and Aurea Luxury Villas – located in different parts of the island and offering the chance to capture its many different sides.

Stone Town

– architecture, narrow streets and everyday life

Looking for one of the best places in Zanzibar to take urban and documentary-style photographs rather than yet another beach shot? Stone Town is an obvious choice. Narrow streets, historic buildings, carved wooden doors, small shops and local markets offer plenty of opportunities to capture interesting details. You can focus on the architecture or simply observe everyday scenes – people returning from the market, vendors setting up their stalls or the constant movement along the streets.

Wide shots work particularly well in Stone Town, but smaller details can be just as striking.

Carved doors, the texture of old walls and sections of colourful façades can easily become subjects in their own right. Keep your camera or phone within reach and take your time exploring rather than deciding in advance on a fixed list of shots.

The photo depicts a tranquil, tropical oceanfront landscape. On the left, a wooden staircase leads from the jetty directly into the turquoise water. Gentle waves crash against the shore and wooden supports, accentuating the coastal atmosphere. In the background, two traditional sailboats with white sails float on the calm ocean.

Jambiani – beaches, ocean and life by the water

The southeastern coast of Zanzibar offers a completely different setting for photography. In Jambiani, the landscape changes with the tides, so the same beach can look entirely different in the morning and just a few hours later. At low tide, large sections of the seabed become visible, along with small natural pools and paths leading towards the ocean. Local boats and the everyday work of people whose lives are connected to the sea can also become part of the frame.

Some of the most interesting photographs can be taken in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon. If you are staying at

Kaskazi Hotel Zanzibar, you do not have to go far to find these views. The hotel is set on a cliff overlooking the ocean, offering the opportunity to photograph the coastline from above as well as the changing landscape below.

Pwani Mchangani

– wide beaches and quieter scenes

Pwani Mchangani lies on the northeastern coast of Zanzibar and has a more intimate character. Long beaches, the ocean and relatively low-rise surroundings create photographs where space becomes an important part of the composition. It is a good setting for silhouette shots, wide coastal views and photographs taken while walking directly along the water.

This part of Zanzibar also offers opportunities to photograph local life. Rather than focusing exclusively on postcard views, look for boats, fishermen, vegetation and small details that reveal the character of the area. Tamu Tamu Zanzibar Boutique Hotel is located in Pwani Mchangani, in a peaceful setting close to the ocean. The intimate atmosphere of the property and its tropical garden also provide plenty of opportunities for photographs without having to plan another excursion.

Beaches and dhow boats

– classic Zanzibar photographs

Traditional dhow boats are one of the most recognisable elements of Zanzibar’s coastal landscape. Their distinctive silhouettes work well in photographs taken from the beach as well as from the water. One of the easiest ways to create a strong composition is to photograph a boat slightly offshore, where it stands out clearly against the sky or the ocean.

The time of day makes a noticeable difference when photographing boats and beaches. Strong midday sunlight produces vivid colours, but it also creates harsh shadows. In the morning and before sunset, the light is softer, making it easier to capture natural skin tones and gentler contrasts. It is also worth keeping an eye on the sky – even a little cloud cover can make a sunset photograph much more interesting.

The photo shows a luxurious pool complex viewed from a bird's eye view. The centerpiece of the photo is a large, rectangular pool with turquoise water, surrounded by wooden decks and light sand. Thatched loungers and umbrellas line the beach lounge area, lending the area a tropical, exotic feel. Surrounding the area are palm trees, walking paths, and the resort's elegant architecture, which blends harmoniously with the seaside landscape.

Spice plantations – Zanzibar up close

Zanzibar is about much more than the ocean. The island has a long history of spice cultivation, and visiting a plantation offers the chance to photograph plants, fruits and the work involved in harvesting them. Instead of another wide landscape shot, focus on details such as leaves, roots, dried spices or the hands preparing the produce.

These photographs add variety to a holiday gallery and show a completely different side of Zanzibar. The greenery of the plantations also creates naturally diffused light, which works well for close-up photography.

You do not need professional equipment for these shots – a good smartphone camera can handle most of them perfectly well.

Jozani Forest – nature away from the beach

Jozani Forest is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to capture the greener side of Zanzibar. Dense vegetation, tall trees and forest paths create a setting that feels completely different from the bright beaches of the southern or eastern coast. One of the most distinctive animals found here is the Zanzibar red colobus, which you may encounter while walking through the forest.

Photography in the forest requires some patience. Wildlife does not appear on demand, and getting a good shot often means waiting and observing for a while. Rather than trying to photograph everything that comes into view, focus on a few frames that show the animals within their natural surroundings.

Sunrise and sunset

– when to photograph Zanzibar

Light is one of the most important elements of a good photograph. Sunrise in Zanzibar creates soft, peaceful scenes, while evening brings warmer tones and a sky that can shift from pale pink to deep orange.

There is no need to wait only for the perfect sunset. Some of the most interesting photographs are taken several minutes before the sun disappears or shortly afterwards. The sky remains bright, while the contrast between people, palm trees and the ocean becomes more pronounced. If you want to photograph the sunset, arrive early enough to find the right perspective rather than looking for a spot at the last minute.

Aurea Luxury Villas

– private scenes on the eastern coast

Not every travel photograph needs to feature a famous attraction. Sometimes the best images are taken in the place where you spend most of your time. Aurea Luxury Villas, located in a peaceful part of Zanzibar’s eastern coast, offer private spaces with their own pools, stylish interiors and outdoor areas. Being close to the ocean also makes it possible to combine photographs of the villa with images of the surrounding coastline.

A private villa gives you more freedom when it comes to photography. You can take advantage of the morning light to photograph the terrace, pool or breakfast, then head down to the ocean and capture the coastline

. It is particularly well suited to travellers who want their photographs to document not only the places they visit but also the more personal moments of their stay.

How to take better photos in Zanzibar

You do not need to bring a professional camera to create a great holiday gallery in Zanzibar. A smartphone is more than capable of capturing beaches, architecture, food and everyday scenes. The time of day and the way you use available light can make a much greater difference than the equipment itself.

When photographing the beach, try to include more than just water and sand in the frame. A boat, palm tree, human silhouette or part of the local architecture can give the image greater depth. When photographing people, however, remember to be respectful and ask for permission whenever possible, particularly if you are taking a close-up portrait of a specific person.

Zanzibar through the lens

Zanzibar offers the chance to create a remarkably varied photographic collection during a single trip. One day, you might photograph the doors and narrow streets of Stone Town; the next, the coastline of Jambiani as it changes with the tides; and later, the lush surroundings of Jozani Forest or the quiet beaches of Pwani Mchangani. As a result, your photographs can tell a much richer story than a series of similar turquoise-ocean shots.

At

World Travelling Company, we help guests choose accommodation that suits the character of their trip. Kaskazi Hotel Zanzibar, Tamu Tamu Zanzibar Boutique Hotel and Aurea Luxury Villas are located in different parts of the island and offer different settings for relaxing and discovering Zanzibar. Whether you are most interested in photographing the ocean, local life, nature or private moments as a couple, the right place to stay can become part of the story you later see in your photographs.
