Tamu means sweet in Swahili. It is the perfect word for this place.
Tamu Tamu is a 10-room wellness retreat in the fishing village of Pwani Mchangani, on Zanzibar’s northeast coast. The village is quiet, the beach is 30 seconds away, and the hotel itself is a lush, tropical garden filled with mature plants, birdsong, and the kind of stillness that makes you breathe differently.
This is a place for people who care about how they feel. The food is built on a vegetarian foundation — fresh, seasonal, and genuinely nourishing — with the flexibility to layer on keto, high-protein, or whatever your body is asking for. The rooftop yoga deck has warm wooden floors and open sky. The outdoor gym has proper weights. The pools are cool and quiet. The spa treatments are personalised.
Tamu Tamu is not a spa hotel and not a yoga retreat brochure. It is warm, human, and Zanzibari — with everything you need to stay connected to your practice while you are on holiday.
10 rooms, each one thoughtful, and designed for rest. The furniture is made by local artisans. The tones are natural. The details are considered. Everything here is meant to help you slow down.
Everything starts with vegetables. The chef builds each meal around what is fresh, local, and in season. The foundation is vegetarian, but you can layer on whatever your body is asking for — high protein, keto, extra greens, fresh fish from the morning catch. This is not restrictive food. It is the most nourishing, thoughtful food you will eat all year. If you have specific dietary needs, tell us before you arrive and we will have it ready.
Fresh juices, smoothies, and cocktails made with local fruit and a lot of care. Everything behind the bar matches the kitchen philosophy: fresh, real, and designed to make you feel good.
Two pools in the garden. The lap pool for morning lengths. The organic pool for floating, reading, and letting time disappear. Sunbeds, shade, and the sound of birds.
The rooftop wellness corner sits under a traditional makuti roof with a partial ocean view. Personalised massages and treatments on request — just tell us what you need. The yoga deck has warm wooden floors and space for up to 20 mats. Use it on your own at sunrise, or arrange a class. The outdoor gym has proper weights and fresh air. And if the best thing for you today is just sitting still in the garden, that counts too.
Tamu Tamu is designed for small group retreats. The whole hotel accommodates up to 20 guests across 10 rooms. The deluxe doubles have twin beds — the standard configuration for solo retreat guests sharing. Full-hotel buyout is available.
The rooftop yoga deck has wooden floors and space for up to 20 mats. The outdoor gym, two pools, and wellness corner are all included. The kitchen will work with you on any dietary programme — vegetarian, vegan, raw, keto, high-protein, or a combination.
